difference between blog and website

One frequent question I have often been asked by my students, clients or friends is this: what is the difference between blog and website. So I’m going to try my best possible to make all clarifications in this post.

Those words “website” and “blog” are always used many times interchangeably – this has further compounded the matter making it more complex and hard to figure out if there is a difference between blog and website. There is a simple yet subtle difference between both.

I was also like that at some point, I’ve heard people use those words and I never knew if there was a difference and what the difference could be. It can be a pain.

If you have had a difficult time figuring this out, take a rest, I promise to make it a piece of cake.

NOTE: Please don’t bother asking which is the easiest way to make money. Because there is none. It takes a lot of efforts, patience, persistence and hard work to make money on the internet. If anyone tells you anything different from this, don’t believe it.

what is a blog

What is a blog?

A “blog” is an abbreviation for a “weblog”.
It is a term used to describe a website that keeps an ongoing chronicled information. What this simply connotes is that a blog is also a website, establishing this early helps clear the air on the difference between blog and website.

Again a blog can either be a “part” or a “type” of a website where contents are presented in a chronological order such that most recent contents appear first – these contents are generally referred to as “blog posts”.
Blog posts are usually archived by date, category, author, tags and also sub-categories.

A typical blog should have a commenting system that invites readers to also participate in the communication process.

What is a website?

A website, on the other hand, is a collection of related web-pages, including also multimedia content, typically identified with a domain name, and published on at least one web server.
Simply put: A website is anything presented on the internet, it can be in form of HTML/CSS, java, python, etc.
A website will usually have static pages, especially the homepage.
A website could be anything from a single page to a 1 billion-users social network like Facebook. Facebook is a website!

Typical Features of a website include:

  • A static homepage
  • A design portfolio of work
  • A blog
  • A frequently asked questions(FAQ) page
  • A displayed client’s testimonials and feedback
  • Products/services section or page
  • A contact page, usually with a contact form for visitors to get in touch.

Difference between blog and website

This is the best way I describe the difference between blog and website:

As the usual saying goes:
All apples are fruits, but all fruits are not apples
Similarly:
All blogs are websites, but not all websites are blogs.

Blogs are a type or part of a website. The major difference between a blog and other types of website is this; blogs are updated from time to time with new contents that are presented usually in a reversed chronological order.

Typically websites are mostly static in nature, contents are organized in pages, and are not updated regularly. While a blog is dynamic, and are updated from time to time with new blog-posts. Some bloggers publish new blog-posts daily, while a website may not be updated in years.

Blogs can be a part of an entire website. Often websites would have a blog section where they regularly create new and relevant contents to inform and also to educate their customers.

For example, Daps’ Digital is a blog and a website. This is so because it has other content which is published not as a blog post. They include services, glossary, about, books, and contact pages. Has this been helpful knowing the difference between blog and website?

Finally, what may now be the new difference between a blog and a website may be the content of the homepage. Since a blog can be a type and also a part. What people see when they first visit your website (static or dynamic page) may be the difference. I prefer visitors seeing my blog posts on my homepage and then have other static pages. That is why Daps’ Digital can be called a website. I hope I’ve been able to explain clearly the difference between blog and website with this.

What do I recommend: A blog or website?

I have also been asked this question randomly. People ask whether or not they should have a blog or a website.

For me, I’ll advise you have both. Most importantly a blog.

Again, it’ll depend on what you want to do with the website and most importantly how you want to do it.

Personally, I’ll always root for a blog over a website generally.

Why A Blog? Are there opportunities in Blogging?

Each blogger has his own reason and motivation for blogging. Many people use it as an alternative to keeping a diary or journal, having an online journal is valuable than offline. Some use blogging to build online credibility for themselves or their businesses.

I recommend:

  • Self-hosted WordPress blog on a custom domain name
  • WordPress is the best CMS on the internet. There is wordpress.com and also wordpress.org. WordPress.org allows you to self-host.
  • A report says over 30% of content on the internet is made of WordPress alone.
  • It is open source – free to use.
  • WordPress has a large community – it has several free and premium plugins to make your blog cool
  • I do not recommend a non-self-host free blog (wordpress.com) – they usually appear like this: “daps.wordpress.com”, and not “daps.com”
  • Some also start with the blogger free non-self hosted platform, their URL always end like this: “daps.blogger.com”. I do not recommend this as well.

I do not recommend these platforms because it’s to me like building a house on another man’s land. Isn’t that a complete waste of efforts?

Free hosting blogs cannot also be used for any commercial purpose.

I recommend using WordPress.org this is because it gives instant access to all the WordPress features. You will also be able to easily make money from your blog without any form of restriction whatsoever.
